cheesy pretzels

Chef Jeff made these AMAZING cheesy pretzels the other night and they were delicious! The recipe comes from the Betty Crocker: Baking for Today cookbook.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (2 oz.)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • Coarse salt, if desired
Directions
  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease cookie sheet with shortening or spay with cooking spray.
  2. Ina bowl, mix all ingredients except egg and coarse salt with a fork. On lightly floured surface, gently smooth dough into a ball. Knead 10 times. Divide dough in half.
  3. Roll 1/2 of the dough into a 12 x 8 inch rectangle. Cut rectangle lengthwise into eight 1 inch strips. Make each strip narrower by folding it in half lengthwise. Pinch edges to seat. Twist each strip into a pretzel shape and place, seam side down, on cookie sheet.
  4. In a small bowl, beat egg with fork. Brush egg over pretzels; sprinkle lightly with coarse salt.
  5. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Repeat with remaining half of dough.
